From the Principal
Tena koutou ngā whānau, ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa,
Welcome back 2025. We have had a lovely start to the year. It has been fabulous to welcome the ākonga back and see them enthusiastic about the year. Learning is well underway in the ākomanga (learning spaces) and the tamariki have settled in well to the school routines. It was lovely to see many of you at the Picnic/BBQ on Wednesday and thank you to those of you who provided feedback on the Strategic Plan. Over the next two weeks there will be further opportunities for you to provide feedback. Myself, or the Board is happy to meet if anyone would like to discuss this further.
Thank you also to everyone who attended the Learning Conferences on Wednesday. These are a valuable opportunity to set up learning goals for the beginning of the year. Please remember if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with your child’s kaiako (teacher), or myself, as we are always happy to have a catch up.
The ākomanga (classrooms) focus at the beginning of the year is on setting up the routines, and expectations for the classroom. This is essential to create a cohesive culture that is focused on maximising learning opportunities for all students. This process is supported through a ‘Rights and Responsibilities’ Unit of Inquiry. Our ‘Big Idea’ for this is that we all have rights, and with those rights come responsibilities. Some understandings the classes are working towards are (depending on their age level) include the understanding that we all have rights, we have the responsibility to not infringe on the rights of others, the rights of children are set out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child human rights treaty, and there are specific rights and responsibilities in the context of school.
Over the next couple of weeks we have our school camp programme. We are appreciative of the assistance of parents on these camps, and very appreciative of the teachers, for whom camps take a lot of additional planning and work to ensure we have safe, successful and enjoyable camps.
I hope everyone has a lovely weekend and a great week ahead.

Non-Uniform Day
On Friday, 7 March we have a non-uniform day. The purpose of this is to support Cholmondeley Children’s Centre who are celebrating their 100th anniversary on Friday, March 7, 2025. To commemorate this significant milestone, they are having a Christchurch-wide non-uniform day to honour their support for over 30,000 Canterbury tamariki.
At our kura we have a close relationship with our harbour neighbours. Our Christmas Tree of Giving gifts going to Cholmondeley Children's Centre and we would like to support Cholmondeley Chilren's Centre celebrating their 100th anniversary. For this, we would appreciate tamariki bringing along a gold coin donation.
